Coachford Greenway was developed as a Multi-Purpose Amenity in 2014 by Inniscarra Lake Tourism Development Limited in association with the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland and in Partnership with the ESB, Inland Fisheries Ireland & Cork County Council.

This project was funded by a Grant from Avondhu Blackwater Partnership, along with funds from Cork County Council, Inland Fisheries Ireland, The Southern Cooperative Fund and the National Countryside Recreation Strategy as well as funds raised from the local Community in Coachford and surrounding area. In 2017 an upgrade was made to this Amenity and was funded by REDZ, Council and the local community.

This is a 2.8km linear park in the form of a walkway. Along this amenity you can enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna, you will see many animals that live near and on the water, like herons, kingfisher, geese, otters and the occasional sea eagles.

Everyone needs to be responsible and respectful of the environment, the wildlife and the rights of landowners. Dogs must be on a lead at all times and not allowed to enter farm lands, causing stress to farm animals.

The Inniscarra Lake was created as a result of the construction of a major hydroelectric scheme which was undertaken in the mid 1950’s. Dams were constructed at Inniscarra and upstream at Carrigadrohid, resulting in the inundation of 3,500 acres of land. A number of bridges, including the ‘new’ Rooves Bridge which you can see to the West, were built, along with 11 miles of roadway.

While the generation of electricity is still the primary function of the Lee Scheme, the Lake also serves as an important water reservoir for the greater Cork area. The treatment works at Inniscarra supply the city and the many industries around Cork harbour through the City & Harbour Main construction in the 1970s.

The dams also allow the flow in the river to be managed in a controlled manner. This. Has reduced the frequency and severity of floods, and ensures that the river does not run dry in periods of low rainfall.

The reservoir is an ideal resource for water sports, including water-skiing on the Dripsey ‘arm’, and boating centres at Innisleena and the nearby Lee Harbour. It also includes the National Rowing Centre, you can see the buoys marking out the racing lanes just off the shore and the recently-developed clubhouse on the far bank.

One of the major changes that took place after the construction of the dams in the 1950s was the change from a river to a lake environment for fish life. Before the construction, the fast-flowing water was suitable for salmon and trout, and the area was well-known for the quality of its game angling. Now, the stiller waters and clean environment are ideal for coarse angling with species such as Bream, Rudd, Roach, Perch and Pike thriving.

Coarse angling has increased steadily in popularity over the last couple of decades and has attracted anglers from all over the world to Inniscarra Lake. The quantity and quality of the catches have resulted in the lake regarded as a world-class coarse angling venue.

The walkway you have just completed was developed as a dual-purpose walking and angling amenity and was used to host the 4th World Feeder Fishing Championship, which attracted a record entry of 25 countries and this has greatly enhanced the reputation of the lake as an angling resource and will be used for similar events into the future.
